Picked up Soylent Green on blu-ray last week and finally had a chance to watch it. I had seen it before of course, but it's been a really long time, so I had forgotten how good it was.
Really liked how detailed the dystopian society it painted was, and who doesn't like Charlton Heston? (at least those of us who know who he is I guess.)
If you haven't seen it lately, it's definitely worth another look.
And I'm curious about something. The ending of the movie reveals a pretty big secret, one that's been reused and parodied for decades. For a while everyone knew it, but I'm wondering if it's so old that there are now people out there that don't know it yet.
So obviously, just in case, don't ruin it for anyone yet.

Seen it - not read it though, on my never ending "to be read" list. I liked the way it showed the overcrowding - every staircase chock full of people and people sleeping in shifts. This aspect reminded me of another good dystopia on that theme "Nowhere on Earth" by Michael Elder.

I've read the book once. Remember liking it, but don't remember much of the story. I do know that the book doesn't have the same ending as the movie.

I've seen the movie a few times and own a copy on DVD. I don't really like Heston as an actor because I think he is more a theatre actor and is too melodramatic for movies but it is still a damned good movie for all the reasons pointed out already. I've never been able to locate a copy of the novel it's based on but I have since found that it is available on Kindle for any of you who have access to one (now that we can actually buy them in Australia I am caught in the dilemma of 'is it worth buying for just one novel?')
Edit: I suppose I should have actually mentioned that it's based on the Harry Harrison novel 'Make Room! Make Room!'

I'm not sure, but I think I have the book in a box upstairs. I'll send it to you if you pay the shipping. Would probably only be a few bucks. Will try to find it this weekend.

The book is different from the movie. Soylent Green is mentioned in the novel, but the big secret doesen't exsist in the novel. The book ends with the worn out, broken down old world just limping along to it's end.

I loved the movie as a kid and finally read Make Room! Make Room! about a year ago. The novel is just a crime story based in a horrendously overpopulated future. The most notable differences in the movie, is of course the big twist, and story arcs involving other important characters. Otherwise the movie did stay quite close to the book.

****POSSIBLE SPOILER******* I did find Edward G. Robinson's death scene to be very moving. Probably one of the strongest parts of the movie. Also the opening montage.

Have to agree with you there, I think it makes for one of the most memorable parts of the movie in a movie that was pretty full of memorable scenes.
