What are your views on man's best friend after it all crumbles? An asset worth having for protection and hunting or just another mouth to feed?
Personally, I grew up with dogs both for hunting and for companionship. I tend to think I would have some around but that would be heavily dependent on my ability to find food.

Well since dog has been along mans side since long before the current global civilization, and been used for hunting since we first came together alongside a fire not as man and dog, but man and wolf. I dont see the cat being useful after the apocalypse as anything but food.

I might just make it a personal goal to end housecats as a species, food or no. Always been a dog person.

Dogs are just extra mouths to feed. Unless they have been specifically trained to hunt, then they're worthless except for their nutritional value - hey, if it's good enough for the Koreans...

I'd like to be all hard ass like you guys, but we are all human and without somneone/something to talk to, we'd go insane weather you like to think it or not. A dog would not only be a loyal companion and hunter but a good friend when humanity has let your down.

I'm not a dog lover, not a fear I just absolutely hate them, so I'd probably go mad quicker with one than without!

While I've owned both cats and dogs, I prefer cats for pets because they're more independent. Dogs are pack animals and need a social group and I'm not one to validate someone's existence, be it man or dog. Having said that though, I've had family who owned farms and kept working dogs and a good working dog is worth it's weight in gold. That's the only kind of dog I'd take, none of those pampered city pooches but a dog that's actually caught it's own food once in a while and knows to keep a look out for other animals like snakes etc. etc. (and people). I remember one friend whose dog would help him hunt kangaroos, that's the kind of dog you want!

I've owned dogs my entire life and honestly would choose a decent canine companion over most of the people I deal with on a daily basis. Yes, it is another mouth to feed but if treated properly, that dog will earn their keep by being another set of eyes and ears as well as someone who'll listen to you when you need to vent.

A dog can also get its own food, my dogs go crazy when the June bugs are out. Nothing funnier than watching a doberman jump up to try to get a bug.

I think a dog woukd be extremely useful for sniffing out food, warning you of danger, perhaps even fighting if it is a big dog. You are going to have to be feeding yourself anyway and chances are the dog would be all too happy to eat the leftover things you may not want to eat yourself. Personally I think a horse would be an asset too as you would be able to cover larger distances and carry more, but it could make you a target if there is not enough food to go around.

I would like to mention that if you get a dog then there are breeds that are gonna be better. Ones that are small aren't going to do well let alone be anything more than a nights dinner. But very large dogs are also not gonna be good to have either. If your gonna get a dog then you should get a medium size dog like a Doberman, German Shepard, or Retriever. A dog that doesn't have a have a family history of medical problems, things that you get with purebreds fairly often. Though if you are gonna have a decent food supply and not wandering then the smaller breeds would probably be ok. From what I heard though is that bulldogs will probably go extinct. So steer clear of them, they have breathing problems from what I hear and with their short legs they aren't gonna be able to outrun very much. Unless you give them a skateboard....

Also near every bulldog birth is done by C section cause their heads are too big.

Nutrition wise, I forget how much, but cat is more nutritious compared to dogs. I've grown up with dogs and I can't imagine not having one. Dogs will be especially useful to hunter, or militant groups for wardogs. Dogs have been around for as long as there has been man, dogs won't vanish that's for damn sure.

Yep, but I don't think size is the only issue. I'd rather have a terrier than a retreiver, for example- because retrievers are bred just to bring back shot animals and not to actually catch anything. I've had several terriers amongst other breeds and they all have a certain killing instinct that other breeds lack because they were bred for it. Of course, my dogs have always been fed so have not had to provide for themselves but even so they have caught and killed small animals like rabbits, moles and rats for pleasure in much the same way that cats do. Also, in terms of how much energy they have there are plenty of larger breeds of dogs who aren't suitable at all for trekking (such as greyhounds) and some small dogs which are very active, such as corgis which are pasture dogs bred for herding cattle and sheep, just like collies. I definitely agree that it would be best to avoid overly bred dogs like bulldogs, dachsunds, basset hounds, dalmatians etc- these overly bred dogs can have a lot go wrong with them, better to stick with a mongrel or a breed that is bred to be hardy. In the end though natural selection will prevail and the dogs will breed freely with each other and probably end up much closer to wolves and dingos than some of the breeds we see today, much like the Moscow wild dogs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stray_dogs_in_Moscow
