That guy who was already blind thinks he's doing well now, but just wait until the shop he buys his groceries at never opens again. He'll be a screwed as everyone else.

If this situation were to take place today, I bet there'd be a lot more violence, at least toward the women in the streets, than Wyndham included in his story.

Man, those people sure do drink a lot. Seems like Masen hit three different bars in that first day. I don't think I've ever had a brandy in my life, and haven't really had anything harder than beer since college.

There's a line about looking or acting more like a pioneer than an Englishman. Did he mean a pioneer like from the American west in the 19th century? Or is there an English version of a pioneer?
Thought it strange they'd know or care about American history that much.
