Hey Guys! Saw this site show up as a referrer URL on my blog. Wow, too bad I didn't find this site earlier. Lots of good info here for me to educate myself on post apocalyptic survival! As gdebad points out above, I'm an indie working on my first Flash game, N.E.O. Scavenger. It's meant to be a post apocalyptic survival RPG, though the setting has some elements of sci-fi, horror, and cyberpunk in it as well. My aim was to make it kinda like a post apocalyptic Oregon Trail, played on a hex map, with inventory management and scavenging being a major part of the gameplay. Version 1 is due for release in January, if all goes according to plan. It'll only have been in development for about 6 months by then, so it won't have everything I want in it yet. But the plan is to continue growing the game through later versions. For now, expect to find: - Post apocalyptic North America, sometime in the future. - Elements of sci-fi, supernatural, and cyberpunk, in a vast wasteland. - Survival mechanics, like hunger, thirst, exposure, fatigue, disease, etc. - Turn-based hex movement and combat, a lot like the early game in Civilization V. - Tetris-style inventory management, akin to Silent Storm or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Light crafting mechanics, such as building fires, purifying water. (Limited number of recipes, though. Need more time to write more!) - Skills and flaws that grant bonuses and penalties, a la Fallout and GURPS. - Scavenging of locations using tools and skills to improve odds. - Gameplay is fairly open, more sandbox-y. But a light story is featured as a hook for future installments. As mentioned above, I could only pack so much into this installment, as I've only been at it for 6 months. But hopefully, it'll give you an idea of the direction I'm headed. So do check it out, and let me know what you think! gamedevgonerogue.blogspot.com/Best, Dan

Hey Dan, Thanks for letting us know about your project. We have a lot of gamers on the board so I'm sure you'll get some good feedback when you're ready to release something.
So I guess it's going to be a Windows game? Any chance for a Linux version someday?

I'm developing in Flash, with the intention of deploying on the web. So in theory, Linux is supported. Though I've only tested on Windows so far.
And glad to hear it, I'm looking forward to the feedback!

Ah, a web-based game would be even cooler. Looking forward to it even more now.

Sounds really cool. I am also very jealous of the guy making it reading his blog. I want to be a game dev so badly.

Haha, don't be jealous. Go ahead and be a game dev! The barriers to making a game are really low these days. Lots of good tools for making games at any experience level. Check out Ludum Dare 48 for some cool examples of what people are making in 48 hours or less. You can play the games they've made, and see the tools they used to make them.
Spare time is really the only barrier left!

As soon as i've finished my manufacturing degree i fully intend on either going to Uni to learn this properly or teaching myself (like that will ever happen). Spare time is a pretty big barrier for me sadly.

For anyone who wants to try the demo, head on over to Blue Bottle Games page for NEO ScavengerThe game is available as "early access" on Steam but a downloadable demo is available from Blue Bottle or you can just play the demo via Blue Bottle's site in your browser. The demo does not have any save function however, so if your character dies, it's time to start a new game! I've had a play with the demo and found it quite a bit of fun and once I've taken care of real life, i.e. paid the bills!, I'm going to buy the early access Steam version.
