Man, Ethan is really a wuss. If I thought my kids might be threatened I'd be out there in a heartbeat. I'm hoping DiLouie started him out acting like this to have lots of room for him to grow during the story.
Though I guess he is probably fairly representative of the population in general.

I thought he was fairly representative of an average person that would be absolutely controlled by fear and shock. It raises a good question about how much you would be willing to tolerate from a guy like that. I think the Bradley would make it easier to tolerate a wimp, and just tell him to stfu and stay in the truck, but if I were on foot....He would get left behind.

I think that his wife was an idiot. I am not a fear monger but when 9/11 it was really hard to get up and go to work and I live 1000 miles from the attacks. If there was an infectious virus that was out and about and it had only been 3 days I would keep my little butt home. ESPECIALLY if I had a child to worry about. After 9/11 it took months to get people to fly again. I few on the one year anniversary to Hawaii and the plane was only 30% full and that is normally a flight that is 100% full. I think the author didn't have a grasp on what a mother would do in the situation. Ethan being a wuss was just annoying.

I totally agree that his wife was an idiot. every one is scared and your husband is staying home but you're going to leave your daughter with daycare? schools aren't open and you have a perfectly capable father at home and you're going to leave her with daycare? silly.
Also, some characters acknowledged and reflected on the new pseudo-lawlessness of the city that Ethan's wife seemed to not be bothered by.
And how did he escape the person in his house? that was unclear to me...
