Dont usually venture into this part of the board because the day to day realitys of survivalism are not really my cup of tea.
But having experienced my own personal hell over the last few days due to a terrible tooth infection which led to two emergency dentist visits its made me realise how horrible it would be not to have such people on the end of a phone.
For a hard-core survivalist would it not make sense to get all of your teeth taken out now and then have several pairs of dentures on hand ?
Genuine question because it strikes me that dentisty is one of the few things that you really cannot do yourself and that having teeth out, along with say your appendix, might make sense if you are convinced that the EOTWAWKI is just around the corner.

I had two teeth pulled recently and need another one out - was thinking the same thing. I feel your pain. The way to go is implants. They are about the same cost as a crown these days, and are just like your real teeth. I am going to need two of them - one to replace a crown that broke. Having a tooth pulled is also less painful generally than a root canal. Plus, the finished product is less likely to break.

You do have a very good point, but it also depends on what kind of food you would have in the apocalypse. Fossils from thousands of years ago show some of the best pearly whites all because they didn't eat things with sugars in them. And thinking about it, to survive in a PA kind of setting, I assume it may be best to eat things with low or no sugar.

Its the apocalypse, unless you stored up on twinkies you dont have to really worry about it. I still keep 2 brush's in my bag though, no toothpaste yet but I will put some in when I think I need to.

As bad as it tastes, you can make a suitable toothpaste from ground charcoal and make a reasonable toothbrush from a twig by splaying the ends.
As for having all your teeth pulled, sometimes it can cause as many problems as it solved. Typically you're better off leaving healthy teeth alone and just getting rid of the bad ones. There's no need to completely remove sugar from your diet, you just need to clean your teeth properly afterwards - sometimes you need that sugar for a quick energy source but we in the Western World have far more sugar in our food than we need.
Ultimately though, while having teeth is sure as hell handy, you don't have to have them to eat food. You can pre-grind food to make it easier to digest or you can cut it into much smaller portions - it's a pain in the rear to do so but just because you don't have teeth doesn't mean you have to give up some foods.

I just started reading the Postman and they mention that several of his friends die by tooth infections that rage out of control. You would have to be like Tom Hanks in Cast Away and have a good tool (or ice skate) to pop that tooth out with. And remember...your gums and heart are linked very closely. If one goes down hill the other usually follows! The big key is HUGE stockpiles of antibiotics.

You can brush your teeth with wood ashes also, but don't swallow it - it's a source of lye. You can also use wood ashes to make biscuits rise IIRC - I've never done it, but just about every Louis L'Amour character has...

Found this article about using charcoal to clean your teeth, the comment about flouride is relevant but only to a point. Do your own research before simply dismissing the potential benefits of flouride to strengthen tooth enamel - I know from my own experience when I was a child that fouride in the drinking water made a significant improvement in my teeth but everybody's body chemistry is different so your mileage may vary! phoenixtools.org/articles/teeth/toothpaste.htmHere's an About article on making your own "natural" toothpaste. chemistry.about.com/cs/howtos/ht/toothpaste.htmThis site is a wealth of information too. mizar5.com/toothpst.htm

Not sure I would start pulling out all my healthy teeth or anything, but do keep in mind, that the PAW (post apocalyptic world) will be a much more busy life for everyone on the day-to-day. On the one extreme, being in a complete survival situation (let's say even modernly, stranded in a remote location alone) the needs on your to-do list will be almost longer than the hours are in a day. finding or building shelter, finding, capturing, hunting food, finding water, making fire, working on ways to signal for help, navigation, cooking and eating, cleaning cookware, the list goes on. That is part of the reason we're a natural pack-animal. With multiple hands to do the different chores, we can achieve more together... hence modern day life-style of working a 9-5 job to pay for everything you need.
While I doubt you'll be chugging down cans of coke and snacking on snickers until the cows come home in the PAW, always having the time, or tools to take care of yourself could be marginal under many different scenarios. I doubt the people that were sitting on roof tops in Katrina were worried about brushing their teeth twice a day. If help hadn't came eventually, or if it doesn't at all... Someone with very healthy teeth today could find themselves with problems down the road - and likely will. Remember too - 'healthy' food vs 'unhealthy' food will be of little concern if your struggling to survive. It'll all just be something to fill the gut for many people.
Just a thought.

get them checked regularly NOW, we go every 6 months, I've only got 9 teeth left in my whole head so I intend to hang onto them as long as possible, failing that I'd have them all taken out, no dentures I've got very strong gums so i'll "mumble" everything with them!! I don't like dentures.

I'm a do it yourselfer and I'm hoping to never get too indepth with any surgeries I'd still make sure I had supplies on hand to tend at least to some basics. If possible having a small amount of pain meds and antibiotics could be life savers in a real situation.Having some basic dental tools as well can't hurt.

Davidwolfe.com This man is an expert when it comes to nutrition.
clove oil is good for teeth pain.
resting from food is good for teeth pain.
getting to know your dentist and offering him your service when an apocalyptic event happens can be beneficial. although they may not have all their equipment they can still offer advice during such a time.
prayer is good for all pain.

It might be worth looking up oil pulling, a very ancient method of oral hygiene. Mouths are hugely important not just for the teeth because you can get a lot of problems from bacteria entering the bloodstream through your gums which has been linked to all sorts of things from heart disease to chronic back pain.

In a decade or 2 our teeth will repair themselves or be repaired by nanites. The future is coming.

clove oil is good for teeth pain. You have to be careful with clove oil, it needs to be used in very small quantities and only for short periods of time. Overuse can cause severe inflammation of the lips and gums that is quite painful to the touch, (I've seen this on a family member who used too much clove oil). Sometimes it's better to have whole cloves and put two or three of them in your mouth, close to the bad tooth. You can chew them sightly after they have softened to help release more of the clove oil but do NOT overdo it and don't swallow them.
